Living the Flysch and Karst in the Basque Country

About the destination

The Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark is wedged in between the Bay of Biscay and the Basque mountains in the municipalities of Mutriku, Deba and Zumaia.

Geology is the true protagonist of a landscape that preserves some of the most impressive episodes in the Earth’s recent history. The 13 km of cliffs in the Geopark have a spectacular formation of rock layers known as Flysch deposits, a large encyclopaedia of over 60 million years of the history of the Earth. You can walk along these cliffs or go on a boat trip and sail across time to discover, for example, the thin layer that indicates the point of extinction of the dinosaurs.

Inland in the Karst world, time seems to have stopped. Here you will enjoy the roots of some of Europe’s oldest caves, occupied by distant ancestors and learn pieces of their culture and way of living.

Ecotourism experiences

In the Basque Coast Geopark, you will be able to discover the peculiarities and secrets of this unique destination together with your guide by joining a geological tour on foot and by boat. On foot you will visit the majestic cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and by boat you will approach the rocky outcrops to see first-hand the most impressive geological perspectives.

You can also join a gastronomic experience to learn about the “octopus of the Flysch”,  its fishing roots and the gastronomy associated with it in the Basque Coast. If you prefer to walk the path in this unique destination, there are many options like the georoute of the Hidden Valley in Olatz or the route of the Flysch, between Zumaia and Deba.

Woodlands and lagoons adventures in Tablas de Daimiel

About the destination

Tablas de Daimiel National Park is the most relevant wetland in the Iberian Peninsula and an incredible destination for wildlife, particularly birds. Winter makes this National Park a nesting place for many migratory birds and a definite stopover for those who pass by during summer. Some of the birds to find here are: great crested grebe, the common grebe, black-necked grebe, herons, egrets, and all kinds of Iberian ducks as well as Bearded reedling.

Ecotourism experiences

In the Tablas de Daimiel National Park there are plenty of ecotourism opportunities to discover this fantastic wetland with your local hosts. As a family experience, we recommend doing an interactive workshop on animal and bird tracks in the Laguna de Navaseca to learn the different breeds in a fun way! Following this, you will put your knowledge into practice on a walk through Las Tablas and its walkways over the water. With the help of your guide, you will be able to identify and photograph wildlife that would otherwise be unnoticed by the non-expert eye.

Tablas de Daimiel is also a perfect spot to link with the nearby Cabañeros National Park or the Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park. Here you will discover a truly “oasis” of crystalline waters and join a guided paddle-surf tour on the lagoons. Your knowledgeable guide will talk you through the geology and natural characteristics of the lagoons whilst you discover their underwater world from your paddle board.

The first trip to America from La Gomera

About the destination

La Gomera is a World Biosphere Reserve Island of volcanic origin located in the Canary archipelago. The absence of eruptive activity for the last 2 million years and a climate that favours water erosion have created a craggy relief driven by deep gullies and overshadowed by impressive volcanic domes, known as Roques

The Garajonay National Park is one of the gems of the island and most of the surface is covered by an evergreen forest, quite a contrast in a predominantly arid island. These laurel forests are a relic of the past, conserving part of the flora typical of the forests that populated the Mediterranean region millions of years ago, and that have since vanished from the continent as a result of climatic changes and human influence.

One of the peculiarities of the island’s landscape are the steep hill agricultural terraces created to provide level space for cultivation. In addition, the island is bursting with biodiversity and endemic wildlife. The coastal waters of La Gomera are one of the best places in the world to enjoy responsible whale and dolphin watching.

Ecotourism experiences

La Gomera Biosphere Reserve will take you to a subtropical jungle in the heart of the Garajonay National Park, a complete contrast to the aridity of the volcanic island, its hills and valleys. With your ecotourism guide, you will be able to discover the incredible Laurisilva forests and learn about its formation, uniqueness and the importance of these last remaining forests in the world.

La Gomera is also a synonym of gastronomy and you can find exquisite local gastronomy in the restaurants and as part of your ecotourism experiences. What about enjoying a stunning sunset with a picnic of carefully picked local produce? Or maybe you fancy lunch in the heart of the forest, La Laguna Grande, an open circular place where, according to the island´s legend, witches held their ceremonies? Our partners in La Gomera have your wishes covered.

Authentic flavours of La Garrotxa

About the destination

The Natural Park of La Garrotxa, in north-east Catalonia, has two totally different types of landscapes. Over 40 volcanoes and lava flows cover much of the southern half of the region, shaping a rolling landscape of moors– today protected by the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. To the north of the river Fluvià the landscape changes radically, showing abrupt cliffs and narrow gorges to give way to the Alta Garrotxa, an Area of Natural Interest.

The valleys of Bas, Hostoles and Bianya are surrounded by some of the thickest and most extensive forests in Catalonia. The sunniest slopes are covered by evergreen holm oaks, whilst elsewhere there are downy oak forests – with a few stands of pedunculate oak around the area of Olot.

Ecotourism experiences

The Natural Park of La Garrotxa is a fantastic destination to learn about the traditional making of local food products. Your local hosts will treat you like at home to show you the landscape and the different products that are made by hand in the region, such as the traditional yoghourts of La Fagueda Cooperative. The icing on the cake comes with a visit to the Ferrer Xocolata artisan workshop, three generations of pastry chefs and now a chocolate artisan!

You can also join a guided tour around the weekly market in the village of Olot to learn about the region’s organic local produce like meats, cheeses or cereals.
