Ecotourism in the land of El Quijote

About the destination

Cabañeros National Park is located in Castile-La Mancha, in between the provinces of Toledo and Ciudad Real. The natural area is home to threatened birds such as Iberian imperial eagle, black vulture and black stork. It is also a refuge for deers, 100 different types of trees and more than 1.000 different Mediterranean flora.

Cabañeros was declared a National Park due to a strong conservation campaign against turning the area against a military firing range. Today, it is the largest hunting field in Spain, due to its large game communities and hunting interest.

Large plains as the result of erosion and well-preserved natural landscapes from the Middle Ages to the XIX century. There are also important fossil deposits with the biggest trilobite prints in Europe.

Ecotourism experiences

Cabañeros National Park is a must-visit destination for responsible wildlife watching with a local guide. We recommend a dynamic itinerary with a local guide combining a route on a 4×4 with a short hike to delve into the fauna, flora, history, geology and traditions of the protected area. You will visit spots of restricted access to the public and, in autumn, you will also enjoy the deer bellowing from a view point only available through this experience.

The night sky is also at its best in Cabañeros and there are plenty of opportunities to learn about the constellations with guided experiences in wide empty espaces like Alcoba de los Montes.

Cultural traditions in the great mountain of Murcia

About the destination

The Sierra Espuña Regional Park is a protected area in southeastern Spain. These mountains are covered by dense masses of pine forests that are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna species. The park is home to 38 species of mammals, 7 types of amphibians, and over 123 species of birds. Due to the presence of the Euroasian eagle-owl and the Golden eagle, the area has been declared as a ‘Special Protection Area for Birds” (SPA).

More than 40% of the plant diversity of the region of Murcia live in the Sierra Espuña, with almost a thousand different species in less than 20,000 hectares.

Regarding cultural heritage, 26 snow pits (ice houses), built in the 16th century, can be found in the park, as well as remains of the reforestation efforts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Ecotourism experiences

The Sierra Espuña is known as the “Mountain of the Sun”, as it is sunny most of the year. This makes the park a perfect place for ecotourism experiences all year round.

Guided walking is one of the highlights of the destination. The great forest of Espuña leads to a path crossing the village of El Berro taking you to impressive gorges and cliffs. Unmissable local heritage can be found along the trail. Your local guide will explain the natural and cultural heritage of the area.

If you like local traditions that are connected to nature the Sierra Espuña invites you to explore the world of shepherds and enjoy a day as a “shepherd’s apprentice” with real shepherds whose families have been in the trade for generations. Surrounded by cowbells and orders being given sheep, goats and dogs, a real ecotourism experience begins, helping visitors to learn about the past and present of a shepherd’s life, both in the corrals and on his journey around the mountains.

Asturias at its best in Redes!

About the destination

Redes is a Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve located in Asturias. The area offers a wide variety of landscapes such as glacials, karst landforms, large pastures, hills and lush woodlands.

The power of the rivers has sculpted open valleys and impressive limestone gorges, like the Alba river and Arrudos gorges. The Park is also home to two of the largest reservoirs in Asturias, which supply water to a large part of central Asturias.

Redes also stands out for its extremely steep terrain and extensive beech and native oak tree forests. You will see with your own eyes how the bees live, organise themselves and work to create their honey, as well as the problems they are currently suffering and the impact they have on the world we live in.

Also, you can join a guided hiking route over the Puente D’Arcu. During this route, you will learn the traditional uses of the land and how the landscape has been changing to what we are seeing today. You will stop to see the mediaeval bridge of Puente D’Arcu and the facilities of Güerta-school, an agroecological farm in Aturian.
